The sound of silence (Poetry)
Stop if you love silence also
There’s something about silence
that can make everything feel too loud.
The hum of the fan,
the tick of the clock,
the empty space next to you on the couch
they all become louder when you’re just sitting, thinking.
It’s funny, isn’t it?
How you can be surrounded by noise,
and still feel like something is missing.
It’s not the big things,
but the little things
the quiet moments you never realized
were quietly stitching themselves into your heart.
Like the smell of fresh rain on a warm pavement,
or the way your favorite book feels
when you’re holding it in your hands again after years.
Like the sound of your mother’s voice,
not when she’s talking to you,
but when she’s just humming softly to herself
in the kitchen
unaware that the hum is a song you’ll never forget.
