How a 5-Minute Conversation with a CEO Turned into a Game-Changing Moment
(Don’t Believe Me, Read On)
The CEO’s schedule was packed and they entered the meeting late after just getting out of another zoom call.
This meant my mentor had less time than they originally planned. Since they were meeting them officially for the first time, my mentor needed to share a little bit of who they were and at the same time inform the CEO of what they needed.
Here’s how they turned a nerve-wracking moment into a win.
They had to be careful when talking to a leader so high up in healthcare.
On the one hand they didn’t want to boast about their accomplishments, and on the other they wanted to include them. So my mentor spoke about a familiar high-level leadership skill, change management. They connected on the topic as he shared a time when he had a group of educators that he was leading them through a new common curriculum.
They laughed over some of my mentor’s stumbling, mistakes, and then how to abstract to other areas in healthcare where change was constant and difficult. My mentor then brought up his need which was to further inquire as to the merger taking place to see if this hospital was a good fit for him.
