Dear New Writer, Asking People for Reads Is Not The Way
A better approach to starting out on Medium
I started writing on Medium eight months ago.
And I too felt the sense of not knowing what to write and how to build an audience. I was a new writer on a platform with thousands of people who knew their stuff.
What was I supposed to do?
But I started anyway, and today, I have more clarity, and found my sweet spot — and writing here doesn’t feel as daunting.
We were all there.
I relate to your questions and seeming “slow progress.” Trust me, that’s how everyone starts. You really can’t fastforward that step if you want to lay a strong foundation.
(Except you go viral on your third story — and that doesn’t guarantee success too.)
The best way to progress is to take the right actions. Write stories from your heart, mess up at first, learn from others, implement, keep writing, and grow.
There is no shortcut.
It’s the same ‘ol script. Do it for six months and you are well on your way to clarity, direction and success.
Asking people to follow you only slows you down. It makes others view you as needy, instead of valuable.
You don’t want that. You want readers who resonate with your writing and love what you do.
So stop it. If you want to progress faster, do things the right way.
Love,
A fellow writer figuring things out too.
