Behind The Smile — A Short Story
Flash Fiction
Martha looked at the young intern with envy. She wished that she could be as young and carefree as this young woman was.
She was laughing at something her boss had just said.
Martha couldn’t hear, but everyone else in the group seemed to find it hilarious too.
Martha was stuck in her position with no hope of promotion.
Being a secretary here was a dead-end job.
She had only just found that out.
She skulked off to the bathroom, wondering when she could just go home.
While washing her hands, the intern walked in.
Her amazing smile disappeared.
“I hate this place. I really hate this place.”
Martha stood there, shocked, as the intern burst into tears.
About These Stories
The story above is part of a collection of short fiction pieces I’ll be posting here on Medium. Once I’ve got them all up, I’m planning to pull them together into a paperback book for people who prefer a physical copy.
When the paperback’s ready, I’ll definitely make a post to let you know where you can grab a copy if you’re interested.
