Something Happening 6 CHAPTER 7 : The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the modern world, reshaping industries, economies, and daily life. As this transformative force accelerates, it raises significant ethical questions that must be addressed to ensure its development and deployment benefit humanity. The ethics of artificial intelligence encompasses a broad range of concerns, including fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy, and the potential impact on employment and social inequality.
One of the core ethical concerns surrounding AI is bias and fairness. AI systems often rely on large datasets to learn and make decisions. If these datasets contain historical or societal biases, the AI can inadvertently perpetuate or even amplify them. For example, facial recognition systems have shown lower accuracy for individuals from minority groups, leading to concerns about racial profiling and discrimination. Ensuring fairness in AI means developing methods to detect, mitigate, and prevent such biases in both training data and algorithmic decision-making.
Transparency is another fundamental ethical principle. Many AI models, especially complex ones like deep neural networks, function as "black boxes," meaning their internal decision-making processes are not easily understood by humans. This lack of explainability can…
