Art As Exploration And Therapy
In our creativity, we slowly find ourselves
“The great power of the arts is to activate, renovate, and transform. Indeed, the arts, as the process of grief, can thaw what trauma and suffering freezes, or at least can help us better endure the sorrows and appreciate the joys of life.”– Sandra Bertman
So you create art of sorts. You’re a vocalist, music producer, writer, or you make YouTube videos. Or perhaps you fancy yourself a poet, collage artist, or display regularly at your local weekly artisan or crafts fair. Displaying your wears for all to poke and pry at.
Basically you fall under the catch-all term of artist, creative, or maker.
Let me say this art thing, this quiet hustle that often frustrates you, leaves you feeling undervalued and overspent, is a powerful tool in your healing journey.
Because at the crux of it
- art helps our voices expand
- it helps us unravel our feelings and emotions
- it helps us hold our pain in a gentler manner
- it beckons us to investigate the truths of our being
- it dares us to show our face to the world
- it whispers quietly to our souls, urging us to break free from limitation
- it reveals to us that nothing truly is worth as much shame as we think it is
- it can help wrap our bleeding hearts in a blanket of knowing and understanding
on a deeper level, art is a universal healing practice and exploration. It goes beyond others’ acclaim of our work, and monetary gain. It helps us walk into the fullness of our being, and makes the world seem more right to us.
Art is healing.
When last did you engage in its wonderful therapy?
Artist note: Hi, I’m Egypt, a multi-passionate writer and poet. Have a read of some of my other writing and poetry, and do share your thoughts in the comments, thanks.
