Imperialism. What are the similarities and differences between the Roman Empire in the 1st to 5th centuries AD and the British and French empires in the 20th century when ruling new territories? What innovations did they bring to the regions they governed? How did they advance the people under their rule and push humanity forward more quickly?
We tend to focus only on the negative aspects of imperialism, but in practice, it also brought many positive changes to the regions it controlled. The ruling empires implemented their systems of government and developed methods to manage distant territories at a time when there were no cars, airplanes, computers, smartphones, or Wi-Fi. Their ability to create such systems under these conditions is an extraordinary achievement.
