Learning on the Job: Embracing the Imperfect Journey of Parenting
From feeling lost to guiding others, my journey as a mom
They say that when a child is born, a mother is born too — and I couldn’t agree more. When I was pregnant, I had no one to guide or support me from my family. I turned to books, asked countless questions, and consumed every bit of content I could find — YouTube videos, reels, and articles. Among all the resources, the NHS-approved site became my most trusted source.
But here’s the truth: I knew absolutely nothing about being a mom. I was learning everything from scratch — how to bathe a baby, how to feed them, and even how much to feed. I constantly felt like I was falling behind other moms. Three of my friends had babies within a gap of a few months. I constantly just kept worrying that I might do something wrong. I wasn’t aware that we have to switch the baby bottles after 6 months. I was instantly overwhelmed by this thought of what kind of mom I am who is not aware of this basic thing. When my little one wasn’t speaking much by the age of two, I dove back into research mode. Then came the phase of toilet training. Each stage brought new challenges, and no matter how hard I tried, I often felt like I wasn’t doing enough.
