Free Association Writing
Uncensored self-exploration through writing
A psychoanalytic technique that aims to access the unconscious mind by expressing your thoughts and feelings freely in an unrestricted, uncensored environment.
It was while watching the movie ‘Sixth Sense’ that the concept of Free Association Writing (FAW) caught my attention. A technique which is mostly used in psychoanalysis and devised by none other than Mr. Sigmund Freud.
The basic motive is to let the patient think for themselves and not to let any other person’s opinions shadow the thoughts of the patient.
The atmosphere should be free from any judgements to make the person comfortable to explore his/her thoughts, however illogical they might be.
Just write one word after another and accept whatever flows as a valid result. The idea is to capture the unconscious self by writing the word in the conscious self.
Every morning when you wake up, just start writing in your bedside diary whatever thoughts come to you. Be it a dream…
