Even as Americans struggle with inflation, the combination of higher wages and low unemployment have allowed millions of people to step up a rung on the economic ladder, leaving fewer people to fill lower-paid service jobs.

This is causing discomfort to the pampered class.

Every single working person I have talked to recently describes being slammed at work. It doesn’t matter what field you’re talking about — factory workers, office workers, medical providers — all are working longer hours and nearly everyone is feeling burned out.

You have to wonder what’s going on. How can everybody be overworked and how can every workplace be understaffed? Have we increased our consumption of goods and services?

What might be happening is that the post-pandemic increases in salary practically everyone has experienced have meant more willingness now to splurge on a restaurant meal or a new outfit or household goods.

Maybe they’ve decided they can finally afford to see their doctor about that thing that…
