left this comment for me at the end of this story about my friendship with a rich woman:

I always just kind of assumed that you were a bit of a bohemian and secretly posh behind all that. You could have easily fooled me.

In fact you still do. I can’t quite buy into the image of you as a genuine impoverished person. You seem much too well educated and cultured to pull off being poor.

I am not saying this to be rude or anything, just observing the difference between your image and your self-described financial situation.

I don’t blame AmazingLarry at all — in fact, I’m grateful for this comment. It gives me an excuse to talk about something I believe is very important:

Many people believe we live in a meritocracy, but we do not.
