The Glory Days of Newspapers

Before technology ruined my career

I miss the glory days of work, back when it was easy to make friends and it was easy to get up in the mornings and go to the office. I told people I loved my job back then.

Please, sit back and relax and lament with me as I take a trip down memory lane, back to a simpler time before technology killed my career.

A career unfolds

As a child, I loved to read and I loved animals. When it came time to choose a career, I either wanted to be a veterinarian or a journalist. A counselor at a junior college told me it was extremely difficult to become a veterinarian, so I decided to become a writer.

During my last semester of college in 1992, I did a 13-week internship over the summer at a small community publishing company. I worked full-time for zero pay. I worked hard, covering whatever assignment was given to me. When I got a cold, I went to work sick. My dedication and hard work paid off because I got a job at the end of the 13 weeks, earning $13,000 a year.

It was an exciting time as most beginnings are; I had no idea then that this would lead to a 24-year career. I joined the newsroom as an editor of a small weekly…
