What ‘reasonable’ conservatives get wrong

I like to read Peggy Noonan’s column because it’s important to expose yourself to diverse points of view. I don’t agree with a lot of conservative talking points, but I try to understand them.

Noonan is not the raving lunatic so many of the prominent conservatives of today are. I can respect her even when I disagree with her.

But here’s what she’s flat-out wrong about.

In her piece , she says that Trump supporters “love their country.”

It struck me when I read that phrase, because it’s not the first time she’s made that statement. She apparently really does believe Trumpers love their country.

Trumpers do not, in fact, love their country.

They love their own kind, or those they perceive to be their own kind — white faux Christians, mostly. By and large, they do not love people of color, liberals, LGBTQ people or feminists. They tend to distrust people who are highly educated and they’re not too sure about anybody who lives in a big city, either.
