Route 66 Travel Journal — Illinois
Take your time; it’s the journey, not the destination
When I go on trips, I keep a journal so I can remember details later. I send my daily journal entries to my family so they can experience a bit of what I am seeing and doing. I’ve enjoyed rereading my Route 66 journals this morning, and I hope you will, too.
I discovered Route 66 by a fluke.
I had to visit Pontiac, Ill., for work. While there, I noticed a Route 66 museum. I wandered inside and was fascinated. Several people from other countries were there talking about their Route 66 journey.
One lady from Australia said she was on vacation for two months and driving the entire route on her own. Then it hit me. I lived in the United States. Why had I never considered doing Route 66? I needed to experience this piece of American culture for myself.
Thus, began my quest and my obsession with the mother road. To date, I’ve made it to the border of Arizona. I need to get back on Route 66 soon. It’s my goal to reach the end of the road in California before I’m 60.
My journey began in 2013 and has been done slowly over the years. In my opinion, this trip needs to be savored with lots of stops along the way. The…
