Most Americans fervently believe we live in a meritocracy. It is one of our core beliefs.

I don’t know why. But then, some people believe vaccines contain microchips, the Earth is flat and the republicans still have a functional party.

Most of us believe a lot of dumb things that don’t stand up to careful thought.

One of these is our persistent belief that net worth and intelligence go hand-in-hand.

High-net-worth individuals are brilliant. Destitute people are dumb. People in the middle class are somewhere in the middle.

It’s untrue, and if you know people all over the income spectrum, as I do, this is surely no surprise.

If you are rich and can’t see how many of your wealthy peers are idiots, I have some bad news for you.

You may be one of the idiots.

I’m sorry to break that to you.

But not that sorry. I know you won’t believe me anyway. Carry on congratulating…
