The murdered UNC student body president was my kids’ running coach

On March 5, 2025, it will be 17 years since Student Body President Eve Carson was kidnapped and murdered in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was 22 years old and was two months away from graduating in biology and political science.

This brutal, senseless killing made national and international news. I remember first hearing about it on the news while I was on a training course in Tennessee. I won’t include those details here — they are readily available online and that’s not what this story is about.

It was particularly hard to hear about her death as Eve had been my daughters’ running coach, in a wonderful program called Girls on the Run. How do you tell your 12-year old that her beloved coach has been shot dead? How do you explain that such things happen in the world?

Girls on the Run is going strong today with programs for teens and younger girls, with the intent of boosting mental and physical health as well as self-esteem. The optional goal of each program is a 5k run. My younger daughter was not able to run a full 5k but instead stopped and started, alternating running with walking.
