One of the most fantastic things about Medium? It has zero ads, so there are no advertisers to please or potentially displease.

If I write something that pisses off vast numbers of readers, they are all free to block me, but no advertiser will get involved. Isn’t that fantastic?

There actually are some “ads” here, broadly speaking. Some people use affiliate links, which means they talk up a product and provide a link to it so any interested readers can purchase it by clicking on that link. The writer gets a cut.

I dabbled in affiliate marketing for a bit. It’s sort of like a business saying, “Hey, I don’t want to pay you to be a sales rep for me, but maybe you’d like to do it for free! If you do manage to get anyone to buy my thing, I’ll give you a few bucks.” I didn’t find it worthwhile.

Some people do use this platform to market their course, book or coaching service. I try to avoid those pieces because I’m not here to be sold to. I am here to read good writing and to try to contribute as much of it as I can.

I am writing only for you, Dear Reader.
