My Three College Roommates: The Country Crab, the Cool Chick and the Chinese Christian

Moving away for college can be an exciting and scary time.

Usually, it’s the first time a young adult is venturing out on his or her own. There are a lot of unknowns, such as finding your way around campus, what classes will be like, and most importantly, how you will mesh with your roommate. After all, this is a person you will be living with in very close quarters for a minimum of four months. It’s a roll of the dice who you will be living with and my first roommate was a bitch.

Moving in

In August of 1990, Mom and Grandma helped me move into my dorm room. It was on the third floor of a co-ed upper-class dormitory. The building was a long rectangle with four floors and a basement. The guys were housed on the right side and the girls were on the left side. The check-in desk and the mailboxes were in the middle of the building.

We lugged my clothes, dishes, typewriter, snacks, mini fridge, laundry baskets and shower supplies up the three flights of steps (there was no elevator). After Mom and Grandma left, I hung my Johnny Depp and heavy metal band posters on…
