Just How Cold Was It?
We just endured a major cold spell and broke new records in North America
All over the northern United States and Canada late last week, new cold temperature records were set. Climatologists are saying that this will continue as a side effect of global warming. These polar vortexes are showing up because of the changing weather patterns across the world.
Mount Washington, N.H., which hosts a weather research observatory at 6,288 ft. above sea level, is the highest peak in New England and everywhere east of the Mississippi River in the U.S. This mountain is famous for its extreme weather swings, which is why the observatory is there.
Last Friday, Feb. 4, they recorded a wind chill of -108 degrees F. That is just under -78 degrees C. That ties a record dating back to Jan. 22, 1885.
Back then, the outside temperature was -50 degrees F, (-58 C) with a wind speed of 89 mph. Last Friday they recorded a temperature of -46 degrees F (-51 C) with a wind speed of 97 mph. I don’t know about you folks, but that is damn cold. Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
