The famous quote from the Lord of the Rings has been scrolling through my mind since Nov. 5. Each day my emotions range from despair to defiance as the consequences of the election are splashed across the media. I supported Biden and Harris for their commitments to democracy, the working class and equality, but most important their acknowledgement that climate change is an essential threat to humanity and the planet. Any setback on addressing climate change will have severe consequences for the future.
Those on the right think they have a mandate, but the truth is Trump only got 49.8 percent of the vote, he has NEVER gotten above 50 percent. He won because of small numbers across vital states put him in the lead (fewer than 240,000 votes total).
This is not a mandate — but it does reflect how divided our country is. And once again the minority of the right wing is going to try and shove their agenda down everyone’s throat. Those who voted because of inflation and immigration did not vote to lose their Social Security or Medicare, to have regulations removed regarding clean air, water or any…
