A young, blond man stares into the background. We cannot see his face, but we can see he wears a small crown, and a red cloak with white fur collar. The trees he is looking toward are bare.

Blaming liberal elites and the mainstream media for the decline of the middle class — and your particular slice of the American pie — is like blaming the kid who points out the king’s nudity instead of confronting the naked king himself.

Remember the story of the king who had no clothes? The kid — too young to doubt himself or use a filter — points out the truth that everyone else is too scared to say. But in today’s political landscape, we often get so caught up in who’s doing the pointing that we miss the real problem: the king is still naked.

So who’s the king in my metaphor?

Oh, no. It’s not the middle class

It’s the neo-conservative elites who parade themselves as protectors of democracy, wealth and freedom, but who are secretly stripping away the very foundations of the middle class.
