I grab the door handle and ouch. A sharp shock zaps through my fingers. I freeze. Maybe this is a sign. Maybe I shouldn’t go through.
Then it hits me, a vision of Calvin upstairs with his hand on the door handle. At the exact same moment, he feels it too.
This isn’t just some random static charge. It’s something else.
Pushing through the door, it slams shut behind me. At the same time, another door slams somewhere below. Someone’s down there.
The weird shock from earlier still lingers in my skin. Rubbing my hand on my jeans does nothing to shake it. I step closer to the edge, gripping the railing as I lean over, trying to see who it is.
“Is that you?” The words echo through the stairwell.
