Let’s take a walk down memory lane. A time when events in the physical seemed deeply intertwined with what we couldn’t see.

Now, picture this.

You’re in SS1 in secondary school (that’s Grade 10 in an American high school). Your school is a boarding school, tucked away in a small town. Suddenly, students start falling sick. The school's sickbay is overwhelmed, and several students have to be taken to nearby hospitals. The school executives are worried.

Students can’t concentrate in class because they’re all battling one illness or another. Eventually, the teachers stop teaching altogether.

No one knows what exactly is making the students sick. A few test positive for malaria, but there’s no consistent diagnosis. It’s not even flu season. Symptoms are all over the place — there’s no clear pattern.

The situation becomes so serious that there’s a death scare. Around this same time, kidnappings were reported in the town. Even traveling to hospitals becomes a risky affair. Not…
