Here are 10 terms of architecture to help you better understand beautiful buildings and there hidden complexities. Use them to show off to your friends about your artistic knowledge.

  1. Balustrade

A balustrade is a low standing railing (usually stone) that is carved in decadence and typically contains gaps. A balustrade is made up of smaller column like supports called balusters in which there are usually gaps between each.

2. Entablature

An entablature is a horizontal decorative section supported usually supported by columns in Classical Greek and Roman architecture. It is placed between the columns or wall and the roof or ceiling. The entablature is split into 3 main parts, the cornice, the frieze, and the architrave.

The top of the entablature features the cornice. The word derived from Italian and means ledge, one can be found at the top of a wall either indoor or out, and is usually the last molding before the ceiling…
