Spreading the Light
Sharing God’s Word
I didn’t quite make it to church yesterday morning, so after listening to uplifting worship music, I tuned into a sermon on YouTube.
Sharing God’s word
The sermon topic was a subject I had been considering over the past week — spreading the light.¹
When Jesus came to our world, He said:
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (John 8:12, ESV)
Contained in a body, He could only spread that light in His immediate geographical location (Israel); therefore He told His followers:
You are the light of the world ... (Matthew 5:14, ESV)
In other words, the light Jesus imparted to all believers was to be shared with the world through their words and deeds by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Imagine if they had kept that light to themselves!
Christianity would never have spread had the apostles abandoned hope during the persecution that caused the diaspora throughout Europe and Asia. Instead, they taught God’s word in synagogues, city squares and other public venues where there were listeners, zealously spreading the light of the Gospel.
