Why You Should Never Ignore a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) During Pregnancy
The Hidden Danger and The Risk You Can’t Afford to Ignore
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common during pregnancy and can be serious if not treated. Pregnancy causes changes in the body that make women more likely to get UTIs. If left untreated, these infections can lead to problems like kidney infections, early birth, low birth weight, and even severe infections in the mother. This is why early diagnosis and treatment are very important.
Between weeks 6 and 24 of pregnancy, the uterus becomes larger and presses on the bladder. This can make it harder for urine to flow out, creating a place for bacteria to grow.
Pregnancy also weakens the immune system. Since the immune system helps protect against sickness, a weaker immune system makes infections, including UTIs, more likely.
UTIs are a common perinatal complication, with studies suggesting that around 2% to 10% of pregnant women experience them.
