Tina Fey taught me to pray.
Sorta.
I’ve never met the improvisation queen, herself, but her 4 Rules for Improvisation began a shift in mindset and spirit for me which led to an embracing of improv as a philosophy instead of merely an art form. This has shift has gradually and methodically had an impact on my work, my relationships, my pursuits, my faith; in no small way it has changed my life.
My two lives
I live dual lives (not in an Ashley Madison sort of way). Professionally, I am a high school theology teacher. I’m also a comedic improviser and owner of that works with individuals, teams and corporation to maximize potential, creativity, collaboration and productivity. I’ve learned to embrace the combination. It’s my sweet and savory. I’m the maple bacon doughnut of the professional world. Two things seemingly opposite that, when used correctly and joined together, awaken the senses.
This wasn’t always the case. For a long time, my energy was spent keeping my two worlds in separate, clearly defined lanes. Then improv made its way into my classroom (because it’s a phenomenal education tool) and everything changed. My students lit up and I saw that…
