Not all Friends are Meant Forever — and That’s Okay.
Some are here for only a reason. Some for a season. Some for a lifetime.
I lost a best friend a few years ago due to a stupid fight. This was a friend I had met on the first day of uni, someone who’d subsequently been present for most of the key moments. That kind of friend.
Now, I don’t even remember what it exactly was about, which just shows how irrelevant it was. Back then, it hurt deeply. It broke me up inside to the point where I felt consumed with anger, sadness, guilt, and bitterness — all the ugly things. I don’t often talk to my mother about my feelings, but this one hurt so bad that I did. During that conversation, she said something that changed my life:
Some friends are only here for a season
“Your friendship has served its purpose. Not all friendships are meant to last forever. Some friends come and go, even after years.”
After weeks of wondering if I should reach out, if he would reach out, or how to fix something that felt so broken, it never occurred to me that some things don’t need to be fixed. Some things simply need to be let go. Maybe my mother was right.
