The Unspoken Reality of Aging as a Woman
It starts small, as most things do. You think you’re imagining it at first. A stranger doesn’t hold the door open for you when you’re walking out of a store. The barista who used to give you an extra smile suddenly doesn’t even make eye contact anymore. An elevator door closes a split second too early, and you are left there, watching your reflection vanish.
And then, one day, you realize that there is a pattern. These little things you took for granted for so long, just… stop. It’s quiet and silent. And since the world hasn’t put up a sign indicating this shift, you assume that you must have done something wrong. Did you change? Of course, the answer is yes. You did. You got older.
I’ve had this conversation with so many women I know. Every single one of them describes the same thing: an unmistakable slide into invisibility that begins sometime after 30. This isn’t about just male attention, though that plays a part. It’s broader than that. Social acknowledgment, in general, seems to decline. You stop being the center of anyone’s gaze. You start feeling like background noise.
At first, it’s baffling. Why? You’re still you. Maybe you’ve even grown into a version of yourself that feels wiser, stronger, kinder. But somehow, those qualities don’t matter as much as…
