POETRY: LOVE LOST

teen love

a poem

like a teenager craving excitement
he had them all
within earshot of his phone
listening patiently, advising, teasing;
I was one of them
I did not know
false love on the loose
causing pain and confusion
the bars melted from the heat
kept inside for too long
and only learned to hurt;
like walking on eggshells or hot coals
everyone missed it
old ladies with their husbands and children
criminals clogging chokeys
coughing, spitting out lungs
into cockeyed air;
I hope your harem grows
as long as you walk
on this earth
with no real consequences
but they will knock on your door, eventually
and you have to trust me on this, it won’t be easy
just as it is not advisable for an adult male
to catch so many women in his web
to wrap them around the fingers skilled in bricklaying
it is tantamount to torment –
terror that rational beings
can dodge
despite disgracefully belonging to the defective category
