Bingeing on ‘The Crown’
The time I became enraptured with the royals
My husband and I have difficulty finding shows that we can watch together because we’re interested in different things. He likes action shows (which typically involve violence) and I like documentaries (which usually involve high drama).
We settled into watching The Crown together as I’d heard it won a lot of awards. Admittedly, the show fell more on my side of the interest spectrum than his, but he was willing to give it a try.
Each night, we’d start the show together, but I’d fall asleep quickly and he’d keep watching. He liked the early shows about Queen Elizabeth’s background and upbringing, which I found to be a bit of a snooze.
What I used to think of the royals
I thought that The Crown simply wasn’t my cup of tea. Truthfully, I’ve always found the royal family to be kind of extraneous — like an outdated armchair that should be taken to Goodwill.
In my youth, I fought with a good friend from England about how useless I thought they were. He argued that tradition was necessary and that their existence was economically and symbolically vital.
