Why Matthew Perry’s Passing Away Feels So Personal
The one where we lost a friend.
“If I did die, it would shock people, but it wouldn’t surprise anybody.”, Matthew Perry wrote in his memoir.
And so it happened. When the grim news of his passing away spread, it shocked the world.
His was well-known, but to think he would be gone so soon was unimaginable.
That is the thing about life: You never know how much time you have with someone. Tomorrow isn’t promised.
As I found myself reeling from his loss, later in the day, I asked myself,
“Why does his loss feel so personal?”
People die all the time. Then what is it about Perry, that had all of us feeling a sense of personal loss?
Much like Chandler, Perry represented each one of us.
There are shades of Perry’s personality inside us all.
Just like him, we are all battling our personal demons. While trying our best to hide it from the outside world. We don’t always win, but we try. Just as he kept trying till the very end. As he admitted, he has been to rehab 15 times over the years.
