Here’s Why the Little Mermaid Is Now Black and not White

Halle Bailey as Ariel in

Did you know that the Little Mermaid teaser earned over 104 million global views when it premiered at the Disney D23 Expo?

That is more than any other recent Disney live-action movie.

Despite this achievement, the trailer has received over 3 million dislikes on YouTube.

So, why is there an uproar towards the Little Mermaid live-action?

The backlash against this movie is because a black actress is playing the role of Ariel.

Since the animated feature film had a white mermaid as Ariel, some people are angry that Disney has gone with a black actress in the live-action.

Some people also believe that Hans Christian Andersen described the Little mermaid as a white mermaid in his book.

Therefore, Disney should have cast a white actress instead.

There has even been an attempt to change the skin color of Halle Bailey to white.
