What makes us alive

I sometimes wonder what makes us alive. Is it our organs, our brain, and our breathing? Or is it our cognitive functions, like memory and perception?

What makes us alive? The coveted happiness? Our friends? Our “other half”? Our family? Our job? Our volunteerism? Our appetite for life?

No, no. I can’t believe it. Maybe it’s a belief in a higher being. A cause. A God. Good or evil. In a religion. A reason for existence. A reason to die. And more than all of that.

And still no. All that makes us alive, but not for long. For a split second, one might say. All this keeps us alert. Not alive.

Love? Is that what you expected to hear? Or pain? No. These are the salt and pepper of life but not the main ingredients. It’s funny to say that. Were you about to read a romanticized version of an article? That might help. But no.

What is it that keeps us alive in this life? What keeps some people in a difficult mental state still a little with us and prompts them to seek help? And other people alive with money and dreams ,losing everything to gambling and greed?

You want to find out. Very much. Maybe you’re mad at me. Or you’ve loved this text more than the others. Maybe you’re even thinking about what that might be and…
