Want To Be Recognised In Your Field? Explore These 3 Things Intimately.
If you’re fighting tooth and nail to be recognised for what you do, the following story probably feels quite familiar.
It may even bring back a little trauma, even if your chosen industry is an entirely different one.
A stand-up comedian, after years of working hard in the NYC club scene doing shitty venues and for a living, is given an opportunity to be a regular at one of the hottest spots. Every comedian worth their salt wants a spot at this club. It’s the ultimate opportunity to supercharge his career. He feels he deserves it — it’s his time. He prepares like a madman, and when his chance finally comes, he gives it his all on stage.
The crowd seems to like it, the laughs are genuine and consistent.
After the post-show buzz dies down, he approaches the legendary (if not a little stern) owner of the venue. He can’t bare to wait. He needs to know if she liked it and understand whether his career will finally get the opportunity he craves.
“You’re not ready.”, she says bluntly.
He stares, before replying in disbelief. “What!? I thought I did pretty well.”
“A strong bomb is better than a weak kill. I’ve got plenty of white guys talking about nothing.”, she counters.
