The Oldest Snacks in the World and Why We Can’t Live Without Them
From popcorn to pemmican, rating snack obsessions lets us make better food choices — until it’s nap time.
At 10 AM, I’m waiting for the library to open. So are a dozen toddler moms.
It’s heartening to see future brains, ages 2 to 5, chilling out in the sun, waiting for their carpet time with blocks and cardboard picture books. No one is throwing a fit, running around like their hair is on fire, or climbing the concrete abutments like monkeys at an ashram.
The kids are preschool age, so maybe they haven’t hit the cusp of mobilized crazy. Maybe it’s too early for low blood sugar and exhaustion to push them into a meltdown. Maybe these moms have it handled. They are at the library, after all. You don’t come to a house of knowledge unless you’re prepared to be Kindergarten Cop.
A peak inside the Cadillac-style strollers, the accruement of baby paraphernalia is impressive. They lounge in cushy setups, miniature sunglasses perched on their pixie noses, and thoughtlessly reach for watery juice or star-shaped puffed snacks.
Which makes me wince.
