There is a proliferation of writers on Medium selling writing courses, I sampled a few, well more than a few, 20 to be precise. I blagged my way to get a copy of the material, and here is what I learned.

It is amazing what you can get for free if you are nice to people. I managed to blag a copy of around 20 different writing courses just by asking nicely. No wonder they were willing to give the material away for free though, most of it is cliched old tripe, common sense advice your grandma could give you. There were however a few gems of advice that I will share below.

Write like a heroin addict — you have to get your fix daily

If you want to get good at anything you have to practice. There is that old ten thousand hours thing that Malcom Gladwell documented in his bestseller Outliers: The Story of Success. Not really rocket science is it, perfectly obvious actually, but then something has to go into these courses so why not the perfectly obvious. How regularly do you have to publish?
