I Didn’t Write on Medium for a Week & Ouch

“I’m sorry I was gone — but look, I made you some content.”

After a week of not posting on Medium, the words of Bo Burnham‘s 2021 Netflix special Inside strike me with a renewed meaning.

The line is from a song wherein the 32-year-old comedian describes being locked in his room during the COVID-19 quarantine. Disco lights flash like a sublime descent from the almighty when he sings the word “content”. A holy item, or so it appears.

“It’s a beautiful day to stay inside,” he concludes, referring to the special’s title. Coincidentally, inside is both where many creators make content and where most of us have stayed since the pandemic.

Burnham’s cynicism in the special may be scathing, but it’s hard to deny when it does ring true.

Notably, how producing content is highly valued and not creating is sometimes interpreted as “being gone.” Really? Is being gone simply not…
