I have used these easy steps to help my friends and family when life throws them a bad curve.

Do you have a friend that is going through a difficult breakup? Is your child feeling down about school? Is your partner depressed about a job loss?

If you think that the best way to cheer them up is by being cheerful yourself, you are very wrong, my friend.

They will resist your efforts. They will be annoyed. They may even transfer their negative feelings onto you and avoid you like the plague.

Step One

If you want to bring someone up, you have to get down to their level first.

That’s right. You have to emotionally get down in the dumps with them. When people are feeling down, they need empathy first. They need to know that you understand how hard this is for them and that their feelings are justified.

‘Being there’ for them means you are with them where they are at this moment. Be a good listener at this point. People need to feel safe and free…
