Does Anyone Else Find Drinking a Bit Weird?
Being the only one sober at a fortieth birthday party.
To be clear the title of my story does not relate to the odd wine with dinner, or alcoholism- the disease. I am talking about the heavy drinking that happens at gatherings.
After my cat died I had to leave the house. Spending too much time at home without her is not good for me as I sense her everywhere. I went to a 40th birthday party on a property in a small bayside town. Most of my friends who attended are in their 50s and 60s.
So much drinking! It started at the house and then continued at the cafe bar. I bought myself a teapot full of green tea. When we charged our glasses to the birthday girl I held up my little tea cup.
I don’t drink. I used to drink a lot when I was very young, but generally, I was pretty ‘meh’ about it. Over time it just disappeared completely. My immune conditions have meant I avoid inflammatories.
The best part of the night was the dancing. The night had a South American flavour as the friend whose party it was is from Brazil. Dancing sober is fun. I have done both. It’s simply better than dancing drunk.
The other great thing about the night was having some connection in moments. And some hugs. I have been a hermit for ages. I…
