Can Science Give Us any Information about Boosting Our Immune System?
The not-so-surprising answer.
With the arrival of Covid, the new catchphrase seems to be follow the science.
So, I decided to investigate what science has to say about improving our immune system. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is fall. That means cold and flu season, in addition to the fourth wave of covid.
The advertisements for supplements promising to boost your immune system are everywhere. But do any of them have any scientific backing?
Our immune system defends us against invading germs. When it works properly, you are healthy. When it is weak, you get frequent colds, flu, and an increased risk of cancer and covid. When it malfunctions, you get an autoimmune disease.
The immune system is just that- a system. As with any other system, it must be kept in balance to work properly. So science continually investigates how the connection between the immune system and other body systems, like the cardiovascular system or the nervous system, works.
Even with years of research and study, they haven’t proven a link between living a healthy lifestyle and having a robust immune system. So, we depend on common sense to guide us.
