Given a choice, I would any day pick either Braga or Porto over Lisbon and skip the latter altogether. The capital of Portugal is a beautiful city, no doubt, but it is also predictably touristy and, as such, immensely avoidable after a mandatory trip, or two. Having said that, it doesn’t always happen as per your wish.

During a recent trip to Lisbon, I made an earnest attempt to camouflage my prejudice, ensured the person accompanying me got to enjoy the best of everything Portugal’s capital city has to offer, and eventually didn’t regret making yet another visit to a city I have honestly got bored with. On an interesting note, I faced a unique predicament during my stay.

Football fans will be aware that the domestic season in Portugal got over recently, and I believe there is no better time to discuss my predicament. That the 2024–25 edition of the Primeira Liga went right down to the wire didn’t come across as a surprise. It was the 34th (and final) round of matches that decided the winner.

A battle of equals
