It all started with my father’s obsession with Radio Ceylon. As expected, he’d turn it on daily, and the old tunes would fill the house.
I’d lie half-asleep, letting the songs wash over me. I didn’t always understand the words, but the music? Oh, it was magical. It hushed me into a profound, fantastic sleep. Slowly, the lyrics began to stick — like gum to a shoe — and soon, I hummed them all day.
I was just a kid back then, and those songs became my world.
They were filled with Indian culture, romance, and the grand expectations of family life. Songs like “Tumhi mere meet ho, tumhi mere geet ho” (You are my beloved, you are my song) made me believe that one day, my Prince Charming would arrive, and I’d sing these very songs for him.
