I’m Engaged
A NYE proposal.
I know. Should I scream, “Surprise!” I have so much to tell you, so I’m just going to get right into it. No need to burry the lead.
*James proposed on New Year’s Eve. I was surprised, but I wasn’t blindsided. We’ve been talking about plans for the future for a while. At the outset of our relationship, we discussed we wanted something serious, and committed. I joked to my colleagues and friends that I either wanted to be completely single, or madly in love. I was done with the in between.
I was looking for someone who wanted to participate in true partnership. They needed to be actively doing work on themselves. Seeking therapy to identify their relationship pitfalls, to grow, to improve their emotional intelligence, and to work on being vulnerable. That’s what I’ve been doing for the past 3 years. I expected my partner to do the same.
So, in that sense, we’d determined compatibility early on. Over the summer, we started discussing what living together would look like. We agreed we wanted to create a home together. James voiced he could see himself marrying me.
That’s when we started to have serious conversations.
