“There is no one else,” he lied to me.

“Is there the thought of someone else?”

“No.” He lied again.

I remember listening to his answers, thinking they sounded familiar. Three boyfriends ago, I had said something similar when confronted with a similar question.

But I was 19 when I lied, and I hadn’t been married to the guy for eight years, nor had I been with the man for twelve and a half years.

Lying was easy. The guy I had cheated on was a saint and would never stray a day in his life. He didn’t know the difference between my bold-faced lie and the truth if it slapped him in the face.

But I knew it felt off when my husband said this to me.

He was ready for this question. His answer came a little too easily. He was a little too prepared.

Only weeks later, on our eighth wedding anniversary, I discovered what I suspected.

How did I find out? Well, coming from a reformed cheater, he did what all cheaters do.
