They Witnessed Jehovah and Dropped By to Tell Me About It

Two Bible-carrying women came to my door recently and spoke some blandly nice things about being neighbors. Then they had a single question for me: What is the one thing that I would change if could change anything?

That’s easy. I would have no proselytizers come to my home. But I didn’t say that. I just asked who they represented and what they wanted. I learned they were Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) and wanted to remind people to read their Bibles. When they asked for my name I thanked them for coming and ended the conversation.

Their assumption that everyone has a Christian Bible at home belies a narrow viewpoint that’s sometimes a feature of the devoutly religious. All religions seem peculiar to me, but JW beliefs are particularly distasteful.

I’m sure the women at my door were nice enough people, but if they adhere to church doctrine they support some underlying and maybe unexplored cruelty and ignorance. Do they reject evolution, think homosexuality is “sexual misconduct,” and believe women should be subservient to men?
