Life is full of situations that are tests for our emotional intelligence and decision-making skills. Whether it’s a problem within a workplace, an issue with a friend, or injustice in society, one question always pops up:

Should we ignore it or confront it?

The answer is hardly ever simple and depends on the surrounding situation, stakes, and potential outcomes. So how to decide which is the most effective?

Ignoring: When Silence Speaks Volumes

Sometimes, ignorance of a situation might be the best choice, especially if the situation is minor or involves individuals who feed off drama. By ignoring, unnecessary escalation can be avoided, and peace of mind will be retained as well as saved energy for important matters.

For example, at work, a coworker’s passive-aggressive remark might not be worth your response. Denying the interaction victory over you in the form of a rise in your emotions keeps you professional and composed. Similarly, ignoring most minor squabbles on social media saves you the angst of fruitless arguments.
