A Layover with a Side of World Wonder
Seeing Chichén Itzá was not what I expected flying home from South America
I was watching the sunset from my Surf Hostel in Peru, somewhat frantically browsing flights simultaneously. My time in South America was coming to an end and as always, I had not booked my return flight yet.
I like to be as flexible as possible when travelling, something that has led to some of my most incredible memories. The only time I scold myself for it is when it comes to booking flights.
Because those pesky last-minute flights are a nightmare to lock in. Prices often fluctuate and rise daily when it’s close to the flight date, so finding the perfect deal can seem impossible.
I had finally dwindled down my options for my flight home to either a stopover in Sao Paulo or Cancun. Remembering my parents had been to Mexico already, I called my mom to ask for her input.
“I mean, Cancun would mean another World Wonder off your bucket list”, she ponders. “Another World Wonder?” I’m slightly confused.
“Yes of course, Chichén Itzá”.
Ohhhhh. This was embarrassing. I knew Chichén Itzá was in Mexico, but I always assumed it was closer to Mexico City.
