Next month will mark 30 years together with my wife. And in the years prior to getting married, we explored the world with all the energy you might expect from a young couple that was just beginning to find a little discretionary money in our pockets.

Our excursions were numerous: Europe, the Caribbean, every major island in Hawaii, Vegas and many more.

But when we made our first trip to Cancun as a couple, we bit off more than we could chew. What we envisioned as an amazing day trip turned ugly fast, yet somehow delivered memories that we still laugh about today.

The vacation had been going great — we’d taken a very informative tour of Chichen Itza, worked on our tans and enjoyed delicious Mexican food. I had also parasailed, making a sketchy running start from the beach and managing to land back where I started, unscathed.

Both my wife and I worked in the travel industry, and she raved about a business trip she’d previously taken to Mexico that included a couple of nights on Isla Cozumel, which is a 45-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen (aka Playa), itself an hour south of Cancun.
