Komodo Dragons in the Wild

Never did I expect to see these amazing creatures in my life, but as we set out to traverse Indonesia with our boat, we knew we had to stop at the beautiful Flores Islands. Since we were part of a rally of boats and didn’t want to see these creatures behind bars like thousands of tourists do every day, we decided to find our own little bay — and we did.

We carefully made our way into the anchorage, dodging obvious reefs along the way. As soon as we dropped the anchor, we were greeted by these interesting creatures. We assume the noise from the anchor rattling must have made them think we were a superyacht bringing food.

The shot above was actually accidental when I was just trying to line up the drone and took a few photos as I turned it around and headed back to the boat. It’s not very often you get to capture these animals without any tourists around, so I’m very grateful for that. About five minutes after the last photo, a 100ft superyacht came in to show the Komodo dragons to the tourists and then headed off again.
